After obtaining his PhD from the University of Western Australia in the area of inorganic electron density study, he moved to Tsukuba, Japan to undertake postdoctoral work. |

A few years later he joined ANSTO as a synchrotron instrument scientist at the Australian National Beamline Facility, also in Tsukuba. In April 2007 he returned to Sydney to join the OPAL diffraction group. |

James's research interests include accurate electron density study, crystallographic data standards, scientific programming, and novel inorganic structures. |
